The idea of forming a community band was that of Mr. Mark O. Marty and Mr. Larry Pfefferle, both employees of the Army Corps of Engineers. The first rehearsal was in March of 1989 with the inaugural performance soon after at the Walla Walla Balloon Stampede that same year. Annual Potluck/Dress Rehearsal at Pioneer Park The band has gone on to perform at a variety of events, both in and out of town, including benefit concerts for the Blue Mountain Chapter of the Red Cross, Milton-Freewater's summer Concerts in the Park, Downtown Summer Concerts in Walla Walla, Balloon Stampede, Art Train, the Great Race, the National Christmas Tree Appearance, Whitman College Commencement and Convocation exercises and for various clubs and organizations throughout the Walla Walla Valley. In 2002 the band commissioned John Jayce Ogren to compose an original work for Concert Band that would reflect the Walla Walla Valley and its history. "Songs and Dances of the Valley" premiered in March, 2003 at Walla Walla Valley Academy to great acclaim. Also in 2002 a Jazz Ensemble was formed and quickly has grown to be an audience favorite. The group performs a wide variety of genres and is a full big-band. Other Chamber Ensembles have also been established and in 2004 the groups began offering full concert programs. Beginning in 2007 the Walla Walla Valley Bands begin a new chapter thanks to a new partnership with Walla Walla Community College. The organization leaves the former rehearsal space of the WA-HI band room with many fond memories. We are extremely grateful to the Walla Walla Public Schools for the last 17 years! Thanks to investments made by the community and local grant-making agencies the organization has had an opportunity to purchase instruments which has significantly accelerated the growth and quality of the Band. In just one year the Walla Walla Valley Bands have grown from 55 to nearly 80 musicians coming together on a weekly basis to rehearse music for its audiences to enjoy on a regular basis.
